Horsford Statement On McCutcheon v. FEC Supreme Court Decision

Statement

Date: April 2, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission:

"Today's Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission further opens the floodgates to special interest dollars in our political system. By striking down a decades-old aggregate contribution cap for political donations, the Court has given the mega-rich yet another opportunity to erode the bedrock of democracy. This decision invites the wealthy to purchase votes and exert influence on public servants. Instead of protecting democracy and promoting equality of free speech, the Court has done the opposite. We have reached a low point in our history for electoral integrity regarding campaign finance.

"For this reason, I have co-sponsored H.R. 20, the Government By the People Act. The bill is a product of the House Democratic Task Force. It combines a refundable tax credit and public matching funds to empower small dollar donors. The bill is an important step forward that gives candidates the support they need to run for office without relying on big campaign contributors."
